How different is Compression load cell from Tension load cell ?

Compression load cell and Tension load cell are both used to measure the tensile loads. The manufacturers use materials like stainless steel and aluminium alloy to design these load cells. Both of them offer good level of corrosive resistance under erratic weather conditions. They are available in capacities from 1 kilo gram to 100 tonnes and come with a verified certificate of calibration. Compression Load Cell

A Compression load cell is commonly used in the weighing industry. It measures the pushing, squashing force and is always installed beneath the object to be weighed. These are unidirectional and are designed to weigh only the downward compression unlike the tension load cell. The working of a compression load cell is different and varied based on bending, shear and column measurements.

How It Works

Compression load cells convert force into an electric signal like any other load cell. The manufacturers attach the strain gauges to the body of the load cell so that when the compression load cell is deformed, the strain gauge can detect the slight deformation and notify the change in voltage. The voltage signal is always directly proportional to the force.

The Compression load cells use ‘The Wheatstone Bridge circuit’ to measure the relative changes with robust accuracy. They are made of materials that do not rust and get scratched.  The manufacturers use a hard cover at the bottom on the base plate to ensure no corrosion damages the load cell. They are used in places where space is limited and are commonly used in industries where goods have to be weighed often. The Compression load cell is not only accurate but also very stable and sturdy which reduce time and ultimately reduce cost.

 

Tension load cell

Tension load cells are also used to alter tension to electrical signal. The Tension load cells moreover reduce the electrical noise and the performance of motors is improved. They control the tension which proves effective and perks up the quality as well.  The Tension load cells are widely used in chemicals, cement, steel and plastic industries.
